While pursuing justice is deeply Jewish, that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In “Into the Water on Dry Land: Navigating the Sea of Social Justice (Without Drowning),” we’ll draw upon Jewish teachings to cultivate not just effectiveness, but also sensitivity and kindness in the struggle for justice. In addition, we’ll look at teachings that support those who are facing the spiritual travails of this work, foes like exhaustion, alienation and burnout.

Rabbi Rothbaum has been active in Jewish social justice for over two decades. Before moving to the Boston area, he was co-chair of the Bay Area Regional Council of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice. He has appeared in front of audiences at the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and participated in rabbinic delegations to Ghana and Guatemala as a Global Justice Fellow by American Jewish World Service. He currently serves on the advisory committee of JALSA (Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action) and the board of the New England Jewish Labor Committee. He has been named an Oreach Rabbinic Fellow by the Amen Institute, pairing rabbis with visual artists in creating content for Jews across the country. He is devoted to creating and nurturing vibrant learning communities and sharing his love of Torah and commitment to justice in formal and informal settings. His writing has been included in The Forward, Sojourners, Haaretz, JTA, Tikkun, HuffPost and the anthology “Peace, Justice, and Jews:  Reclaiming Our Tradition” (2007). Rabbi Rothbaum is a passionate advocate for the idea that every moment is an opportunity to make a Jewish choice.
