TELEM is in full swing and we are gearing up for another great year of volunteering and learning! The community service did not stop during summer vacation. This summer, TELEM teamed up with the Union of Reform Judaism’s Eisner Camp an
d established a new partnership with the Central Berkshires Habitat for Humanity (CBHH) chapter.
This exciting partnership brought 122 Eisner campers to various Habitat sites in Pittsfield, MA to participate in CBHH’s Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative. At one site, the campers witnessed the fruits of a Habitat project as they worked with volunteer supervisors to ready a completed house and area for “move-in day.” At a second site, campers completely transformed an overgrown and neglected Habitat house lot to create a clean, attractive and safe area for local residents to use.
“This was an eye-opening experience,” said Harris, an Eisner camper. “Going into it I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was great. I truly felt that I helped contribute to make things better for the family that will live there. My parents do a lot of volunteer work and now I feel like I am doing my part too.”
Not only did the campers, all entering 10th grade this year, get their hands dirty, they also took the time to learn about the issue of homelessness and Habitat’s work to provide safe and affordable housing. TELEM is very excited about this new partnership with Camp Eisner and CBHH!
