Emergencies strike without warning, leaving devastation in their wake. In moments of crisis, whether caused by natural disasters, terror attacks, or infrastructure failures—ordinary people often serve as the first responders, stepping up to save lives before official aid arrives. Recognizing this, OneDay Social Volunteering launched a groundbreaking emergency preparedness program to equip Israeli communities with life-saving skills. With the support of CJP’s Haifa-Boston Connection, this initiative has expanded its reach, ensuring that more individuals and communities are trained to respond effectively when disaster strikes.
The urgent need for such a program became painfully clear on Oct. 7, 2023, when Israel faced a devastating terror attack from Gaza, resulting in thousands of deaths and an unprecedented national crisis. That tragedy was a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness in times of crisis, highlighting the need to be ready for other looming threats—one that is not a matter of “if” but “when” an earthquake will occur. Earthquakes in Israel are a well-documented and imminent risk, posing a different kind of challenge and requiring a proactive approach to preparedness. Given Israel’s location on a major fault line, a powerful earthquake could lead to the collapse of tens of thousands of buildings, putting entire communities at risk. Studies show that 90% of people rescued during emergencies are saved by those around them, underscoring the critical importance of local preparedness.
In response to these risks, OneDay Social Volunteering launched its Rescue Training Program in September 2024. This initiative is designed to train volunteers across Israel in academic campuses, and within communities, to become immediate responders. Working in collaboration with local volunteer groups and chief security officers, OneDay is fostering a new generation of proactive leaders equipped to act swiftly and effectively in times of crisis. Volunteers receive expert training in rubble rescue, first aid, and psychological support based on the “6Cs” framework: Care, Compassion, Competence, Communication, Courage, and Commitment. Additionally, they learn alternative communication methods essential for emergency coordination when conventional channels fail.
The program is led by highly experienced professionals, including a paramedic with a master’s degree in disaster management and former senior officers from the Home Front Command, ensuring the highest level of instruction. A partnership with Magen, a leading organization specializing in advanced rescue techniques, further enhances the program’s impact.
Beyond its practical benefits, the initiative fosters positive social encounters between young people from different backgrounds, origins, and religions. This shared experience strengthens not only their ability to respond to emergencies but also their sense of self-efficacy and control, ultimately enhancing both personal and collective resilience. In times of crisis, strong community ties are just as crucial as technical skills, enabling coordinated responses rather than chaos.
“When I joined the Student Rescue Unit, I never imagined how significant it would be. The training gave me not only the tools to save lives, but also a real sense of mission. I know that in a time of emergency, I can be the one to help and save people—and that is indescribable,” one student explains.
Thanks to the support of CJP’s Haifa-Boston Connection, OneDay has already established two emergency preparedness units in Haifa, significantly expanding the reach of this initiative. These units provide essential training and equipment, empowering more individuals to step forward as first responders in their communities. Visionary donors have recognized the importance of this mission, ensuring that the program continues to grow and reach more communities across Israel.
“We are proud to lead such a significant national project together with our partners and to expand the response to emergency situations through community volunteerism,” says OneDay CEO Elad Blumenthal. “The community’s volunteer spirit may be key to saving lives and changing the face of dealing with disasters in Israel.”
