In partnership with Temple Israel of Natick, JFS helped to sponsor and coordinate a virtual screening of the powerful and award-winning documentary “Gen Silent.” Filmed a decade ago, “Gen Silent” reveals the concerns, challenges and triumphs of several LGBTQ elders in the Greater Boston area and remains keenly relevant today as our “rainbow elders” continue to seek care that is informed, competent and supportive of their sexual and gender identities.
After the film, a guided discussion of LGBTQ+ aging concerns and coping strategies was led by Julie Nowak, LGBTQ+ initiative coordinator for BayPath Elder Services. The screening was open to all members of the Temple Israel community.
Sue Schaufeld, who chaired the “Gen Silent” event, said: “The topic looked at the challenges, concerns and triumphs of several LGBTQ+ elders in the Greater Boston area. There was a thoughtful discussion following the showing of the documentary, and Julie created a non-threatening [environment] to allow questions and dialogue among the participants.”
