ADL honored Chief Thomas Fowler of the Salisbury Police Department and Mary Kiley of St. John’s Preparatory School at its 2024 Essex County Law and Education Day. The event took place at the Kernwood Country Club in Salem on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, and was attended by over 300 supporters from across New England. ADL’s Essex County Law and Education Day brings together students, educators, law enforcement officials, community leaders and elected officials to honor and celebrate those who exemplify ADL’s values and ideals. Chief Fowler was honored for his incredible commitment to fighting hate and his continued work and collaboration with the ADL. Mary Kiley was honored for her interfaith work at St. John’s Preparatory school supporting Jewish students.

The event featured keynote speaker Andre Tippett, who serves as the executive director of community affairs for the New England Patriots. Tippett is a former professional football player in the National Football League (NFL), where he played 11 seasons with the New England Patriots as a linebacker and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008. Tippett joined the ADL to discuss how athletes can inspire communities to confront hate, bias and antisemitism.

“Sports have a unique ability to break down barriers and bring people together. When athletes champion the cause of tolerance, they inspire their communities to do the same through community outreach programs, sports clinics and mentorships. Athletes can engage with people from all walks of life, encouraging dialogue and dismantling stereotypes,” said Andre Tippett, New England Patriots executive director of community affairs.

“The work of protecting our future is a daily calling of teachers and peace officers, and concerned citizens, each and every day,” said interim regional director Rabbi Ron Fish. “When our young people look out at the often troubling and sometimes terrifying landscape of our world, we can reassure them that they are not alone. Others care about building a more peaceful and a more just future too. The admittedly hard work of getting there requires all of us, but we can dispel the darkness when we work together.”
