At Jookender, we have always believed in the transformative power of art to heal, connect, and inspire. This belief became the foundation of our deeply moving “Art Can…” program, made possible through the generous support of Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP). Thanks to their visionary grant, we brought young adults together for a series of art therapy classes to process and reflect on the tragic events of October 7, 2023, in Israel, using creative expression as a tool for healing.
A Collaboration Rooted in Creativity and Community
This meaningful program was made even more special through our collaboration with the incredibly talented local artist Irina Tolmach. Irina brought her expertise, passion, and creativity to each class, guiding participants in exploring their emotions through various artistic mediums.
Together, we worked with acrylic paints, glass painting, and wood burning—each medium offering a unique way for participants to express their grief, resilience, and hope. Irina’s gentle guidance created a safe, welcoming space for young adults to explore their creativity while processing their emotions. Her ability to connect with participants and encourage them to tell their stories through art made each session deeply impactful.
Creating Art, Building Resilience
The art pieces created during these sessions were as diverse and powerful as the participants themselves. Acrylic paintings captured the vibrant emotions of hope and loss. Glass paintings reflected the fragility and strength of the human spirit. And wood-burned designs told stories of enduring connection and unbreakable bonds.
One participant painted an olive tree, its roots deeply embedded in the earth, symbolizing the resilience and unity of the Jewish people. Another used wood burning to craft a Star of David surrounded by intricate patterns of light and shadow, a testament to the balance of loss and hope. Glass paintings of Israeli flags, broken yet held together, reflected the collective strength of a people determined to rebuild and thrive.
Healing Through Community
These sessions went beyond the creation of art—they became a source of healing, connection, and solidarity. Participants reflected not only on their emotions but also on the shared grief and hope of the global Jewish community.
As one participant shared, “Through Irina’s classes, I found a way to express feelings I couldn’t put into words. This program gave me a sense of belonging and reminded me of our community strength.” Another participant reflected, “Art allowed me to channel my grief into something meaningful. It was a way to honor what we lost and hope for a brighter future.”
Our Deepest Gratitude
This program was only possible through the unwavering support of CJP and the extraordinary collaboration with Irina Tolmach. We are profoundly grateful to CJP for their trust in Jookender and their recognition of the importance of community healing through art. Their support has allowed us to create a space for young adults to process, connect, and rebuild—individually and collectively.
To Irina, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Your dedication, talent, and compassion made each session a transformative experience, and your impact will be felt for years.
Looking Forward with Hope
As we celebrate the success of the “Art Can…” program, we look forward to the possibility of continuing this vital work. We hope that CJP will continue supporting projects like these, which strengthen communities, nurture resilience, and honor the values that bind us together.
Art Can Heal. Art Can Unite. Art Can Transform.
Thank you to all who participated in and supported this journey. Together, we have shown that even in the face of tragedy, art has the power to bring light, hope, and healing.
May we continue to create, to connect, and to honor our shared values—together.
