I was born and raised in Israel, served in the Israeli army, and most of my immediate family still lives there. As the anniversary of Oct. 7 approaches, I find myself reflecting on the complexities of living abroad while my heart remains deeply rooted there. This date is now etched into the collective memory of the Jewish people and reminds us of profound loss, resilience, and the unbreakable bond we share with the land and people of Israel.

For Israelis, Oct. 7 is another chapter in our shared history that stirs up a range of emotions—grief for those we’ve lost, gratitude for those who continue to protect us, and a steadfast resolve to preserve the essence of who we are. Although I have lived in the United States for the last 15 years, this date weighs heavily on me and my connection to Israel only grows stronger.

I think of the quiet strength of those back home who bear the dual burden of grief and hope. I think of the families torn apart, the dreams shattered, and the scars that may never fully heal. I also think of the remarkable resilience of the Israeli people—the way we unite in times of both joy and pain, with a spirit that refuses to break.

Here in the U.S., I’m part of a vibrant community of Jews and Israelis, and on Oct. 7, we will stand together in solidarity. But alongside this unity, there’s a deep sense of longing—a longing to be home, to walk the familiar streets, to feel the pulse of the nation as we collectively remember, and to honor those we’ve lost. I find comfort in knowing that wherever we are, we carry Israel with us—in our hearts, in our conversations, in our prayers.

As the anniversary approaches, I am reminded that our responsibility goes beyond remembering; it calls us to actively engage in shaping Israel’s future. Whether by supporting civil society, nurturing connections between Israel and global Jewry, or fostering dialogue and understanding, we are all part of Israel’s ongoing story, no matter where we live.

This day is one for reflection and mourning, but also for hope—hope that through unity, strength, and compassion, Israel will continue to flourish. May the memory of those we’ve lost be a blessing, and may we continue to strive for a future where peace and security are not just aspirations but realities for the land and the people we hold so dear.
