This event explores the experiences and contributions of young creatives of Jewish heritage in the U.S. who have roots in the former Soviet Union. We have brought together panelists (see below for bios) from the world of music, theater and visual arts to share their different stories of migration and adaptation, as well as engagement with their ethnic and cultural history.
This event is presented in connection with BRAI’s exhibition MIGRATION + MEMORY: Jewish Artists of the Russian and Soviet Empires, currently on view at the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, until Jan. 28, 2018. Exhibit curator and BRAI Executive Director Anna Winestein will moderate the discussion and Q&A.

DAVID GAMARNIK is an actor and mathematician based in Boston. Hailing from Tbilisi, Georgia, he is a professor of operations research at MIT by day. He has trained as an actor and is a member of Boston’s Arlekin Theater, recently starring in Arlekin’s critically acclaimed production “A Dead Man’s Diary.”
MARK KELNER is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Washington, D.C. Conceived in Moscow before his parents’ emigration, he was born in the U.S. He is represented by Galerie Blue Square and is currently showing work at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts in New York.
ANASTASIA SEIFETDINOVA is a pianist and music professor based in Boston. Born in Ukraine, she received part of her musical training in Germany before obtaining a master’s and doctorate degrees from The Hartt School in Connecticut. She has recorded for Naxos and is currently on faculty of the New England Conservatory.
ANNA WINESTEIN is an art historian and arts entrepreneur based in Boston. Born in St. Petersburg, she grew up in Brookline. She is the founding executive director of Ballets Russes Arts Initiative, and has published widely on Russian art and culture and its relationship with the West.
