Temple Emanu-El in Haverhill will hold its annual service commemorating Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. A potluck dinner will precede the service at 6 p.m.
The service, featuring traditional Sabbath liturgy, songs and readings, will be preceded by a candlelit procession of the youth of our community. We will be joined by members of the Greater Haverhill Clergy Association and by local tailor Frank Quintiliani, who lived in Strasbourg during World War II and will share his memories of living under Nazi occupation. The Temple Emanu-El Makheila (choir) will bring their voices to the music of our service.
Yom HaShoah, an annual day of remembrance of the victims of the Shoah, or Holocaust, was established by the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) in 1951 and is observed by Jewish communities worldwide. Shoah, which means “catastrophe” or “utter destruction” in Hebrew, refers to the atrocities committed against the Jewish people during World War II.
“This year, after anti-Semitism exploded in its ugliest and most deadly form in Pittsburgh, we come together for a night of memory and mourning of history’s anti-Semitic apex,” explains Cantor Vera Broekhuysen, spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-El. “We remember the dark depths into which the Holocaust dragged Europe, in the 1930s and ‘40s. We honor our dead, and the courage of those Jews and gentiles alike who spoke and fought against the hatred that washed over those lands, as human decency was drowned in fear and violence. And we recommit ourselves, in this year, to “never again” suffer hatred based in fear of religion or ethnicity, to endanger lives or dignity. All are welcome at this service, to make this commitment, and I hope you’ll join us.”
The service will be preceded by a Share-a-Shabbat potluck dinner with Mr. Quintiliani, who will share reflections and conversation with us. All food should be dairy or pareve.
