This course will examine the second chapter of Masechet Ketubot, which discusses the ketubah (marriage contract) of a widowed woman. We will discuss key Talmudic concepts that determine the validity of testimonies and the outcome when claims of different legal strength are pitted against each other.
The authors of the Talmud frequently express halachic principles through liminal cases; together, we will encounter some interesting and imaginative scenarios that the rabbis posited in order to clarify the guidelines of laws of ketubah.
Each session will begin with a half-hour of chavruta study, followed by a 30-minute shiur based on the material covered during the study time. Bring your own chavruta, or we’ll help set you up with a new learning partner.
Course dates: 2/13, 2/27, 3/6, 3/27, 4/10, 5/1, 5/15.
