In a fascinating account from Parshat Beha’alotecha—in response to the people’s complaints about food—Moses turns to God in utter desperation: “Have I conceived this people? … I am not able to carry [them] by myself … If this is how it’s going to be, kill me now.” As we study this story, seeking to understand what was so egregious about this complaint that it brought Moses to his breaking point, we will find that Moses is speaking to us, subtly but movingly, about what it means to conceive, birth and nurse a child, with surprising implications for how we experience faith in God, our Heavenly Parent.
Beth Lesch is a scholar at Aleph Beta, where she researches, writes and records original videos on Torah topics. Before that, she had the privilege to serve as the director of Ma’ayan for three wonderful years. She holds an MBA in nonprofit management and an MA in Jewish professional leadership, both from Brandeis University’s Hornstein program, as well as a BA in history from Yale University, and has studied Torah at Midreshet Rachel v’Chaya and at Nishmat.
