Tu B’Av, the 15th of the Hebrew month of Av, was a day of celebration connected to two major events: the beginning of the grape harvest within the agricultural cycle and with the splitting of the wood in the building of the Holy Temple within the historical narrative of the Jewish people. The Mishnah teaches that the young maidens of Israel adorned in plain white clothes would celebrate by flocking to the fields and vineyards to dance together (perhaps to find a shidduch (love match)). In describing the day, our sages invoke the imagery of the receiving of Torah and of a wedding.

Tu B’Av has come to be understood as “Hebrew Valentine’s Day.” Like bushels of grapes into wine and like piles of wood into grand buildings, love in all its forms is about transformation and the hope of what is surely to come.

Join the incredible Sarah Dudek for an afternoon of screen-printing a custom Tu B’Av/love-related design. With a donation of $18 toward Base BSTN, you can reserve a beautifully comfortable T-shirt to print on for yourself or a friend, partner or family member whom you love! For folks who pre-register, we will have paper, tea towels and tote bags (limit two items per person).
