In the 1930s, when even the most popular Jewish musicians were banned from public performance, the owner of Berlin Germany’s Hebrew Book Store set out to record the songs of his community. From cabaret stars to local cantors, Semer Records covered it all: cabaret songs, klezmer, German folk songs, novelty numbers, religious music and arias. On Kristallnacht (Nov. 9, 1938), the Nazis destroyed it all, burning thousands of records, arrangements, and master recordings. The music was thought lost forever. Ethnomusicologist Rainer Lots spent the better part of the 1990s tracking down nearly the entire catalog.

Now, the music of Semer Records lives again thanks to an international all-star ensemble of contemporary Jewish musicians from Europe and the U.S., including Alan Bern (Brave Old World), Loren Sklamberg (Klezmatics), Daniel Kahn (The Painted Bird) and other noted performers. Together, they create an unforgettable evening of songs and stories.

The concert features Yiddish supertitle translations and a post-concert dessert reception for all.

“It’s a dialogue between the past and the future with different approaches speaking to one another.”
Alan Bern
