Broadway is coming to Milton thanks to the efforts of Fontbonne, the Early College of Boston, and benefactors Frances and Robert Birmingham. In collaboration with community leaders, Fontbonne will be hosting the international cast and crew of theater sensation “The Pianist of Willesden Lane” for a one night-only fundraising performance open to the community. Featuring Grammy-nominated pianist Mona Golabek, the play chronicles Golabek’s mother’s true story of survival during the German Blitzkrieg in 1938.
Set in 1938 Vienna and London during the Blitzkrieg, “The Pianist of Willesden Lane” tells the true story of Lisa Jura, a young Jewish girl who dreams of being a concert pianist at the storied Musikverein Concert Hall. Lisa is swept up in a turmoil of world events prior to World War II and transported by the Kindertransport to London. At age 14, everything about her life is overturned, except for her love of music and the pursuit of her dream.
“The Pianist of Willesden Lane” is based on the book “The Children of Willesden Lane” by Golabek and Lee Cohen, specifically for the education of students to understand this critical moment in history. Golabek has performed her play for more than 400,000 students in London, New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. Now in its 24th edition, she continues to spread its message.
While there will be only one performance of the play itself on May 2, Fontbonne will be hosting three free matinees for Boston-area students.
