In a time of deep division, amidst the war in Gaza and the rise in antisemitism, racism, and demonization of immigrants, two unlikely groups, Cape Verdeans and Jews, have joined together in a spirit of understanding and unity. This year’s theme is “Peace, Pás, Shalom, Salaam – for All.” For the past 17 years this event has given Jews and Cape Verdeans the opportunity to share their cultures and celebrate commonalities and their interconnected histories.
Highlights will include speeches on this year’s theme and performances by Cape Verdean recording artist Jorge Gorila and his band, and Jewish klezmer recording artist Adah Hetko. Due to two waves of Jewish immigration to Cape Verde and generations of intermarriage, a large number of Cape Verdeans have Jewish ancestors. Now members of both communities live together in Greater Boston, Rhode Island, and in many places around the world. This event is structured around the Jewish holiday of Passover, which commemorates the biblical liberation and exodus of Jewish slaves from Egypt. The event will share the stories of each group’s journey from slavery to freedom.
