Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson and former Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim will be among the speakers at the 17th Annual Cape Verdean-Jewish Passover Seder, addressing this year’s theme: “Traditions That Guide Us.” Scholar Zelinda Cohen will speak via video on the Cape Verdean-Jewish connection.
For the past 16 years this event has given Jews and Cape Verdeans the opportunity to share their cultures and celebrate commonalities and interconnected histories. This year there will be an in-person event in Boston at the Thelma D. Burns Building in the Roxbury neighborhood. From 1927-1968 that facility was a synagogue and Jewish community center. There will also be a virtual component linking the event to people in many parts of the world.
Highlights will include performances by Cape Verdean recording artist Bino Barros and Jewish klezmer vocalist and accordionist Kaia Berman Peters, and there will be presentations from members of the Cape Verdean-American Student Association at Brockton High School and The Tent at Temple Israel Boston.
Due to two waves of Jewish immigration to Cape Verde and generations of intermarriage, a large number of Cape Verdeans have Jewish ancestors. Now members of both communities live together in Greater Boston, and in many places around the world.
This event is structured around the Jewish holiday of Passover, which commemorates the biblical liberation and exodus of Jewish slaves from Egypt. The event will share the stories of each group’s journey from slavery to freedom.
