For the past 16 years, the Cape Verdean-Jewish Seder has brought together Jews and Cabo Verdeans from Massachusetts and Rhode Island to meet face-to-face, share and celebrate their cultures, and explore what they have in common.
This year, there will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person gatherings, with small in-person gatherings in Boston and Praia, Cabo Verde, linked to people in many parts of the world and the U.S. virtually.
This year there will be people from Cabo Verde, Portugal, Israel, Ecuador, France and Uganda presenting, along with people in California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and other parts of the U.S.
Mayor of Boston Michelle Wu will be addressing the attendees. The theme this year will be “Honoring Our Past in Challenging Times.”
Highlights will include performances by Israeli-Portuguese musical group Al’Fado and Cabo Verdean rising star vocalist Ja Diva. Youth from Temple Israel in Boston and members of the Cape Verdean Student Association of Brockton High School will perform.
Due to two waves of Jewish immigration to Cabo Verde and generations of intermarriage, a large number of Cabo Verdeans have Jewish ancestors. Now members of both communities live together in Greater Boston and around the world.
This event is structured around the Jewish holiday of Passover, which commemorates the biblical liberation and exodus of Jewish slaves from Egypt. The event will share the stories of each group’s journey from slavery to freedom.
This seder is also co-sponsored by Cape Verdean American Community Development, Cape Verdean Association of Boston, Consulate General of Cabo Verde and Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers.
