This year, everything is different! For the past 15 years, the Cape Verdean-Jewish Seder has brought together Jews and Cabo Verdeans from Massachusetts and Rhode Island to meet face-to-face, share and celebrate their cultures, and explore what they have in common. This year, Jews and Cabo Verdeans around the world will join together online for an international event whose theme is “A Celebration of Resilience.”
Highlights will include a performance by Cabo Verdean superstar Elida Almeida and recording artist Gardenia Benros, who is Cabo Verdean with Jewish ancestors. Youth from Temple Beth Zion in Brookline and from a school in Cabo Verde will share their talents. Speakers in Cabo Verde, Portugal and Washington, D.C., will offer their reflections.
Due to two waves of Jewish immigration to Cabo Verde and generations of intermarriage, a large number of Cabo Verdeans have Jewish ancestors. Now members of both communities live together in Greater Boston and around the world.
This event is structured around the Jewish holiday of Passover, which commemorates the biblical liberation and exodus of Jewish slaves from Egypt. The event will share the stories of each group’s journey from slavery to freedom.
