Dr. Hankus Netsky invites the public to Temple Beth Israel’s annual Morris and Edith Hollender Memorial Tish, “Shabes in Upper Remety.” The online community gathering honors the memory of the late Morris Hollender, Temple Beth Israel’s longtime baal-tefile (lay religious leader) and Torah reader, who died in 2015, and of his wife, Edith Hollender, who died in 2020.
Auschwitz concentration camp survivors, the Hollenders came to the Boston area from Czechoslovakia in 1967. Temple Beth Israel honors the Hollenders each year by hosting a “tish” (a community sing around a table) featuring melodies that Mr. Hollender learned as a child in the Munkacs region of Eastern Czechoslovakia and shared generously with others during his time in the U.S.
Dr. Netsky is the co-chair of New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation Department and founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Once again at this year’s event, Dr. Netsky will be joined by members of the New England Conservatory’s Jewish Music Ensemble and TBI congregation members, who will help him lead the singing.
