For thousands of years, Jews have talked about Israel. Few topics have inspired more attention, more debate, and more dreams. Whether you’re curious about the origins of Zionism, the root of the conflict, or today’s landscape, talking about Israel isn’t always straightforward. With a sea of information to navigate and emotions in play, finding the right way to talk about it can be tough.
In this in-person three-part course, join Dr. Jonah Hassenfeld, Schechter Boston’s director of learning and teaching, to dig into the origins of Zionism, the key moments in Israel’s history, and the paths that might lie ahead. We’ll ask tough questions, analyze historical sources, and express our own beliefs, perspectives, and arguments. But, most importantly, we’ll strive to have productive conversations. How do we engage thoughtfully with controversial political, social, and historical topics?
No prior knowledge of Israeli history is needed—just an open mind.
