“Broaden the place of your tent, and stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, stint not; Lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.”
—Isaiah 54:2
The Boston area is blessed with a vibrant and thriving Jewish community; however, an important barrier to entering it, the cost of housing, has been rising. We cannot be an open and inclusive community if only those in a handful of professions can afford to live here, and if even fewer can afford to raise children here.
Fortunately, the path isn’t set. Many of the most important decisions regarding housing affordability are not made in the White House, Congress or even in the State House on Beacon Hill. They are made in our own backyard: in City Hall and in zoning and planning meetings. These are the very meetings that decide what gets built, who can live here and how people will be able afford to live here. As a community, we can have a pivotal influence on these important local decisions.
Please join us for a discussion (and bagel brunch!) with the mayor of Cambridge, Mayor Marc McGovern, and Jesse Kanson-Benanav of B’nai Brith Housing and A Better Cambridge. We will discuss the different facets of housing policy and what we can do to create a more affordable, inclusive and open community.
This event is cosponsored by the Orthodox minyan at Harvard Hillel and Moishe House Without Walls.
