Through the prism of poetry, excerpts from novels and memoirs, as well as modern midrash and prayer (piyyut), we will consider how voices in modern Israeli literature respond to trauma. We will explore the tension between collective identity and existential yearning, sacrifice and secularization, religious zealotry and maternal love.

Our readings will include the poetry of Yehuda Amichai (among others), modern feminist midrash from “Dirshuni,” and selections from David Grossman’s novel, “To the End of the Land.” We will also consider the contemporary work emerging from Israel in response to the most recent events, in particular the collection “Shiva: Poems of October 7th” (Rachel Korazim). Alongside primary literary sources in translation, we will read a few critical texts about Israeli culture and society.

Hebrew language would be an advantage but is not required. All texts will be available in translation. Love of literature and an open-minded heart are required.
