Research Conversation: The Rise of Right-Wing Politics in Hungary and the Effects on Historical Remembrance

Hungary, along with other Central/Eastern European nations, experienced a century of chaos suffering from the effects of two world wars and decades of Soviet control.

Danielle Luman, certificate student at Salem State University and graduate assistant for the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, asserts that after 1989 these countries wanted to move forward into the 21st century, largely ignoring their traumatic history. This discussion will explore how Hungary has moved toward a largely authoritarian state under populist leader Viktor Orban and will discuss the profound impact on the ways in which the past century is remembered today.
