Religion in the Public Sphere: A Case Study of the Menorah
Today in America, the role of religion in the public sphere is a hotly debated topic. Some argue that the first amendment protects all religions’ rights to be expressed in public, while others argue that the same amendment protects the public’s right to be free from any religious expression. Together we will revisit the origins of menorah lightings in public. When this idea was first considered in America in the 1980s, many Jewish groups fought against allowing a menorah on public property, all the way to the Supreme Court. How has public sentiment toward religion shifted in the intervening years, such that many or all of us today feel pride in the city’s public celebration of Hanukah? What can this teach us about ourselves and our status as Jews in America today?
