Join us for “The Torah Was Given to Israel; What Was Given to the Gentiles? The Origins and Functions of Noahide Law” with Rachel Slutsky.
As we approach the holiday of Shavuot, a celebration associated with receiving the law at Mount Sinai, it is worth pondering how Jews conceive of the gentile relationship to law. Must gentiles follow the Torah? If not, must they follow any laws at all? And what does it mean for gentiles to be commanded? Is that something the Jewish people should enforce?
In this class, we will examine the Jewish conception of the gentile relationship with law by studying the Sheva Mitzvot bnei Noah, the Noahide laws. We will examine their Second Temple origins, their rabbinic reception and the Christian development of a “law for the gentiles” to better understand the Jewish concept of law and its place in a broader Jewish Weltanschauung, or worldview.

Rachel Slutsky is a doctoral candidate in Jewish studies at Harvard University, where she is writing a dissertation about the ways in which Second Temple and rabbinic texts use anachronism to rewrite biblical narrative. Rachel earned her BA (honors) in Hebrew Bible and English literature from Stern College and her MA in Hebrew Bible from the University of Chicago. She lives in Cambridge with her husband, Jacob.
