This three-part series will explore notions of pleasure, consent and boundaries. Where does the notion of “obligation” resonate or clash with your own personal experience of sex, sexuality and relationship?
Join Rabbi Nikki DeBlosi, Ph.D., for a frank and relevant exploration of some Jewish texts on human sexuality, infused with pop culture and contemporary views. Rabbi Nikki holds a BA in gender and sexuality studies from Harvard University and an MA and Ph.D. in performance studies from New York University. She combines an academic background with an approachable, non-judgmental and very open-minded approach to the subject matter.
Week 1: Pleasure & Frequency
How often should a person have sex? Does frequency make a difference? What is the role of pleasure in sex? How important is pleasure? Is pleasure a physical sensation or something else? Should pleasure for its own sake be encouraged or discouraged when developing a sexual ethic?
Week 2: Intimacy & Consent
This week we will discuss the notions of intimacy and consent. How can we dig into difficult Jewish texts and their ignoring of some people’s sexual agency? How can we bring contemporary consciousness-raising to the way we value consent, Jewishly?
Week 3: Sex Without Marriage
Does, can or should Judaism acknowledge or accept sexual intimacy outside the context of marriage? How might traditional biblical, rabbinic and communal prohibitions and restrictions surrounding sex outside of marriage guide our own decisions about sexual intimacy?
Class held if we can gather 10 full-paying students. We will make every effort to make the class accessible to those who cannot afford the registration fee.
