On the coast of Kenya, where deeply held traditional beliefs in curses and witchcraft are widespread, being born with a disability makes one susceptible to abuse, abandonment or even death. In “Kupenda,” three tenacious young people impacted, respectively, by deafness, cerebral palsy and cognitive delays, set out on an epic journey to climb the tallest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, determined to prove to the world—and to themselves—that they are as capable as anyone.
This screening will be preceded by the short film “Adam” and followed by an online conversation with director Philip Knowlton and Julia Spruance, one of the guides featured in the film.
