While many are aware that Jews are the “People of the Book,” few are aware that this title was bestowed by Islam. But, was it a compliment, as it is generally taken to be? We will investigate the relationship between Islam and Judaism, beginning from Islam’s very founding.

We will look at:

  • The attitude of the Qur’an to Jews and Judaism and the relationship between Muhammad and the Jews of Medina
  • The portrayal of Jews in the classical and later Islamic sources
  • The relationship between Muslim and Jewish exegetical materials
  • Islamic legal rulings on Jews and Judaism

We will end with a discussion of the medieval polemics between Muslims and Jews, from both the Muslim and Jewish perspectives.

This course will be taught by Dr. Shari Lowin and meets on Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., for five weeks, beginning July 7.
