New Gen Shabbat in the Sukkah: Bedouin Communities in Israel

On Friday, October 2nd, it’s New Gen Shabbat in the Sukkah! We will be joined by Nadia Ben-Youssef, U.S. Representative of NIF-grantee Adalah: The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. Nadia lived in the Negev for four years leading Adalah’s international advocacy on behalf of the Bedouin community and challenging policies of displacement.
Over Shabbat dinner, we will use the themes of Sukkot to frame our discussion on Bedouin communities in Israel today. During Sukkot, we practice the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim, the welcoming of guests, and we eat and sleep in a sukkah, a temporary dwelling. With these themes as a backdrop, we will learn about:
• The history and current lived reality of Bedouin citizens of Israel, half of whom live in villages that are “unrecognized”
• Legal and advocacy efforts to secure basic services, such a water, electricity, schools and health clinics, and the community-led struggle for recognition
• Key human rights concerns of the Bedouin community, including displacement and home demolitions, as well as opportunities to advocate for equality.
We are very happy to be holding this event at the new Moishe House in Cambridge! Moishe House and NIF will provide a kosher dairy Shabbat dinner. Bringing hechshered kosher sides, dips, drinks, and desserts is encouraged.
