How and why does the ability to navigate ideological differences within classrooms matter to Jewish education—and beyond? In this session, Esther Friedman will discuss her recent study on the lived experiences of Orthodox teachers who teach Bible in pluralistic community schools and the institutional-level challenges they face.
Esther S. Friedman is a research fellow at the Collaborative for Applied Studies in Jewish Education, housed at The George Washington University. She brings experience bridging research and practice to developing knowledge-for-use in Jewish education. Esther recently completed her Ph.D. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has been involved in Bible education for more than 20 years. Her dissertation studied the impact of interactions with students in the non-Orthodox school system on Orthodox Bible teachers’ personal ideologies.
