Join BRAI for the season opener in the concert series accompanying our Migration + Memory exhibition project. This performance will feature a unique blend of Jewish folk songs in Yiddish and Hebrew, popular Jewish traditional instrumental music, and masterpieces by Russian-Jewish composers of the I9th and 20th century, performed by Newton-based Nigun Chamber Ensemble.

The critically acclaimed, award-winning Nigun Chamber Ensemble (“Nigun” in Hebrew means melody) is devoted to the preservation of a unique musical heritage stemming from Jewish composers and their communities in pre-war Eastern Europe. The ensemble, consisting of piano, violin, cello, clarinet and voice, presents programs that include classical and folk traditions ranging from klezmer to chamber music, art song and liturgical music. Founded in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1991 by artistic director Yelena Neplok, the ensemble had its American premiere 20 years ago in 1997 at NEC’s Jordan Hall.
Migration + Memory: Jewish Artists of the Russian and Soviet Empires is an exhibition featuring approximately 100 works drawn from the Vladimir and Vera Torchilin Collection that explore the creative responses, as well as historical trajectories, of Jewish artists born, trained or active in the Russian as well as Soviet empires in the 20th century. Curated by BRAI’s executive director, Anna Winestein, it takes place at the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton from Oct. 12, 2017, to Jan. 28, 2018. It is accompanied by an extensive program of events in Clinton and Boston.
