Five unusual biblical books—Ruth, Esther, Song of Songs, Lamentations and Ecclesiastes—have a unique role in Jewish life: each provides a liturgy for a festival in the cycle of the year. Beyond that, each of these books is delightfully idiosyncratic compared to the rest of the Bible.
We will discover what makes these books so special through a close reading of the primary texts as well as secondary literature that puts them in the context of Israel’s experience in the ancient Near East. With instructor Rabbi Neal Gold.
This 10-week course will meet weekly on Mondays from Nov. 4 to Jan. 27 (except for holidays). For financial aid and other questions, contact meah@hebrewcollege.edu.
Me’ah Select is a one-semester, in-depth exploration of a specific theme, text, personality or slice of Jewish history, taught at the college level but without papers and assignments. It is led by outstanding instructors from the Me’ah Classic faculty.
