OneTable and Riverway Project have come together with artist, writer, singer and Jewish educator Sarah Aroeste to present a Ladino night of celebration at the end of Hanuká (Ladino for Hanukkah) and beginning of Shabbat!
The pan-Mediterranean language of Ladino has, unfortunately, been fading away in recent years. But the continued musical legacy of Spanish Jews and their descendants like Sarah highlights the strength of an oral tradition that spans many centuries and crosses many geographic boundaries. Join us for an evening of story, song and food as we celebrate the last day of Hanuká and Shabbat.
Sarah will lead you through a delicious bumuelo-making tutorial, interspersed with performances of traditional and contemporary Ladino songs. She’ll close out the night with Shabbat blessings with Sephardic tradition and we’ll bask in the light together!
If you’d like to cook along with Sarah and make bumuelos (fried Sephardic beignet-like treats), the full ingredient list is below:
- 1½ cups flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- Pinch salt
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large bottle of grapeseed or peanut oil, for frying
- 1 cup sugar for syrup, optional
- 3/4 cup water for syrup, optional
- 1 Tbsp. rosewater or orange blossom water for syrup, optional
