“The Band’s Visit” (Promotional still)

A band comprising members of the Egyptian police force head to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts center, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town. The film provides a poignant cross-cultural exploration of Egyptians and Israelis, showing them both as ordinary people with ordinary hopes, lives and disappointments.

A discussion led by Ashraf Hegazy, son of Egypt’s first female diplomat, will follow.

Hegazy developed a strong interest in cultural similarities and differences and has been involved in Arab-Jewish dialogue since 1992. He is the former executive director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Dubai Initiative, which established the Dubai School of Government as the first graduate school of public service in the Arab world. Currently, he is a Middle East political analyst and an instructor and consultant in leadership for systems change and negotiations. Hegazy is affiliated with Harvard University, where he teaches executive education courses, as well as several institutions in the U.S., Europe, Middle East and South Asia.
