Our Jewish communities are meant to be warm and welcoming spaces where people can truly feel a deep sense of belonging. But too often, weight stigma—sometimes blatant, but often quite subtle—creates a barrier to full involvement. This stigma not only manifests in physical barriers like chairs that don’t accommodate the largest among us, but more insidiously in words expressed by clergy or community members. Either way, the message is clear: fat people are not fully embraced in community and thin people—women especially—need to police themselves lest they become fat.

As studies have shown, weight stigma contributes to negative health outcomes, including increased risk of depression, anxiety, disordered eating, low self-esteem and other mental health issues. Our Jewish values call on us to learn more about this form of stigma. And Jewish tradition itself can offer powerful guidance on how to create communities that welcome everybody.

In this webinar with Rabbi Minna Bromberg, Ph.D., you’ll learn how to be more aware of how and when weight stigma occurs, and what you can do to confront it in order to build a more just and inclusive community.
