This six-session class will introduce you to the ancient art of Torah chanting. About 1,300 years ago, the Masoretes of Tiberia developed a system of cantillation marks, or trope (Te’amim), which gave melodies and phrasing to the Torah readings, as well as vowel pointing for Hebrew, which detailed its pronunciation. In this class, you will learn some of the approximately 26 trope symbols and their melodies, so you can learn to be a Torah chanter. Prerequisites: The ability to read Hebrew, and keep a tune.
