Following this special Shabbat service and Kiddush luncheon, professor Solomon Schimmel will be leading a thought-provoking discussion on four different approaches to interpreting the Torah.
For more than 2,000 years the Torah has been the most influential book of the Jewish people, and it has been studied in depth and detail by sages and scholars. We will look at traditional and modern views about the nature, authorship and authority of the Torah, and we will also consider some ethical and moral implications of these different views.
Solomon Schimmel is professor emeritus of Jewish education and psychology at Hebrew College. He is extremely knowledgeable and encourages discussion as an important part of learning. His interests include psychology of religion, comparative religion ethics and classical Jewish thought and texts.
