Temple Chayai Shalom welcomes the entire community to a completely different kind of Shabbat experience!
The traditional Shabbat evening service will be enhanced with mash-ups of songs from the 1960s like “Light My Fire” by The Doors, “Happy Together” by The Turtles, “Feelin’ Groovy” by Simon and Garfunkel, “Mr. Tambourine Man” by Bob Dylan, “With a Little Help From My Friends” by The Beatles and many more. The music will be played and sung by Cantorial Soloist David Rothberg with help from Rabbi Kenneth Carr and several talented congregants.
Attendees are encouraged to wear hippie garb, like tie-dye clothing, denim, headbands, long-haired wigs, peace buttons and other era-reflecting outfits that will help us enjoy this fun and spiritual nostalgia trip.
“It was amazing that, once we started looking, there were great matches between much of the great music of the ’60s and the prayers of Shabbat,” said Cantorial Soloist David Rothberg. “There’s so much about peace, love and understanding. At times we had to just change a word or two to make the link. Other times, we rewrote parts of a lyric in a fun and spiritual way.”
The service will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to socialize and meet Rabbi Ken Carr, Cantorial Soloist David Rothberg and congregants.
