At Facing History & Ourselves, the very core of our work is to support and empower teachers to approach genocide education with intention, rigor, and a deep understanding of both the historical context and patterns of human behavior that lead to these atrocities.
If you are looking for resources or support as you work to respond to Massachusetts’ genocide education requirements, outlined by MA S2557, “An Act Concerning Genocide Education,” Facing History is here to help.
Join us for a day of learning and conversation as we seek to build a common understanding of the legislation and the resources Facing History has to support you. We know that genocide can be one of the most challenging topics to tackle, demanding great attention to nuance and detail during instruction, as well as requiring a level of empathetic analysis and ethical reflection that is not required by most topics.
During this forum, we will:
- Be in community with educators from around the commonwealth to share and learn together.
- Explore how Facing History’s approach to teaching about genocide incorporates both historical case studies and current events, including the recent rise in antisemitism.
- Engage with resources and content that can be implemented in middle and high schools, and see how they align with Massachusetts standards, civic learning principles, and SEL.
- Hear directly from Dr. James Waller, Christopher J. Dodd Chair in Human Rights Practice, University of Connecticut, and director of academic programs at the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities.
- Provide guidance and support for Massachusetts educators around S2557, “An Act Concerning Genocide Education.”
