How can architecture help Israel prepare for natural or man-made disasters, including cyber warfare?
This March, Tamar Warburg and Dr. Noam Austerlitz ran an intersession course at Tel Aviv University on resilience centers: transforming an emergency response center school into an energy-positive resilience center to shelter a neighborhood in the event of a disaster, including cyber sabotage of the power grid. Students were tasked with designing a school that functions on-grid as an environmental education center, or taken completely off-grid in the event of an attack. Whereas the whole exercise was originally theoretical, the design team is now in the process of actually getting funding and transforming the school into a test case for resilience and energy independence.
Tamar Warburg:
Tamar’s green architecture work in both her native Boston and in Israel are efforts to “future-proof” buildings, design buffered islands of resilience and energy-independence in an era of political and climate change. Her built work includes Excel Academy in East Boston, 270 Centre St. in Jamaica Plain, the Library in Kibbutz Ketura, and the Daniel Rowing Center in Tel Aviv. In Israel, she directed the Green Architecture Studio for eight years, and for the last 10 years in Boston worked with Studio G Architects. She has just launched a new firm to develop and design energy-positive projects using innovative technologies to test new ways to live in harmony with our communities, our cities, and our planet. Tamar completed her MA and BA at Harvard.
Dr. Noam Austerlitz:
Noam is professor of sustainable architecture and urbanism at Tel Aviv University. His teaching and research on ecological approaches in city and landscape design extend to his private practice in Tivon, and his SID Center showroom and professional development center for innovative technologies and sustainable materials near Netanya. In recent years he led strategic processes with municipalities, government offices and businesses, promoting cutting-edge sustainable innovative technologies and integration of novel design and urban planning approaches. Noam earned his Ph.D. in architecture and town planning from the Technion and his BA from Bezalel.
