Anti-abortion activists of the late 20th century commonly compared legal abortion to the horrors of the Holocaust. Referencing the abuses of the Holocaust enabled anti-abortion activists to frame legal abortion as a human rights issue and effectively recruit conservative Christians to the anti-abortion movement. This talk will address the ways that American Jewish leaders responded to an analogy that they felt was disrespectful to the memory of Jews who were murdered during the Nazi genocide and how they fought back against a comparison that appropriated Jewish trauma to advance a political goal that the majority of American Jews did not share.

Rachel Kranson is the director of Jewish studies and associate professor of religious studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Her work focuses on the history of American Jewish gender, sexuality and class in the latter half of the 20th century. At HBI, Kranson will be completing her final chapters of “Religious Misconceptions: American Jews and the Politics of Abortion.”
