Shir Joy Chorus will be one of four choirs participating in Communities of Song. The concert is an official ArtWeek Massachusetts event.

The event is also the proud recipient of a grant from Music Drives Us, sponsored by Ernie Boch Jr. Communities of Song is one of only 10 events out of 500 to receive this unsolicited grant. Director Nan AK Gibbons accepted the grant this past Wednesday at a reception at the Wang Center in Boston.

The concert will feature four choirs: Shir Joy Chorus from Westborough, the Wesley Ghanaian Choir from Worcester, Band of Voices from Barre, and the Wesley Choir from Worcester. There will be a pre-concert discussion on the benefits of community choral singing at 3 p.m., followed by the concert at 4 p.m. There will be a free-will offering to benefit the Central Massachusetts Pastoral Counseling Center, and a reception will follow the concert.

Each choir will perform several pieces and then all the choirs will come together to sing four pieces, including the premier of an original composition by Nan Gibbons. Shir Joy Chorus will be singing the popular “Lo Yisa Goy,” a rousing version of “Mizmor L’David” with clarinet and drum, the beautiful “Uri Tzafon,” and the poignant “Even When God Is Silent,” which was recently featured at the Central Massachusetts community-wide Yom HaShoah commemoration.

In addition to ArtWeek Massachusetts and Music Drives Us, the concert is sponsored by the Westborough Cultural Council (a member of the Massachusetts Cultural Council), the Jewish Federation of Massachusetts, friends of Shir Joy, friends of Band of Voices, and the Wesley United Methodist Church.
