Join the Vilna Shul and Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts for a historic walking tour of the first Jewish cemetery in Massachusetts (1844). Located in East Boston, this cemetery is also home to the oldest surviving Jewish mortuary chapel in Massachusetts, dedicated in 1903.
Lisa Berenson, JCAM’s Director of Educational Programming, will take us on a walk through Boston’s Jewish past as we learn the historical significance of Massachusetts’ Jewish cemeteries, customs, traditions and the unusual headstone iconography. Tour participants will come away with a greater understanding and appreciation for these “museums of memories.” The cemetery and chapel are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Part of the tour will cover the current restoration project at the chapel, which will soon be transformed into the East Boston Immigration Center.
Please note that this is an outdoor program; please dress appropriately. No flip-flops or open-toed shoes.
There are no bathroom facilities on the property. Food and drink (other than water) are not permitted inside the cemetery.
