This virtual book launch will celebrate publication of Julia Mayer’s “Painting Resilience: The Life and Art of Fred Terna.” The book is the first full-length biography of the renowned Holocaust survivor and artist that includes reproductions of more than two dozen of Terna’s works.

The book is Mayer’s very personal exploration of the role Fred Terna’s art played in surviving four concentration camps; his post-World War II marriage to his emotionally scarred childhood sweetheart, a fellow survivor; their escape to France, Canada and the United States; their divorce; and his subsequent happy marriage to Rebecca Shiffman (a daughter of survivors) and the family they created.

Terna said that living through the Holocaust was luck, but living with it takes skill. Mayer wanted to discover what those skills are, record how Terna acquired them and illuminate the manner in which his art gave rise to his “example that painful and destructive memories do not exclude a happy and productive life,” as he puts it. Says Mayer, “I wanted to capture his stories and artwork together for future generations.”

Mayer will read a brief selection from the book, spotlight some of Terna’s works from his time in the camps through today, and hold a fireside chat with Terna moderated by professor Willa Johnson of the University of Mississippi. A Q&A with the audience will conclude the evening.
