The Nigun Quartet plays traditional sacred Jewish melodies with the rich musicality and experimentation of jazz. Jazz makes space for a subtlety that allows for the renewal of the nigun, the Hasidic melody. Juxtaposing dreamy soundscapes with deliberate rhythms, the Quartet’s music is a delicate balance of contagious rock-band energy and understated finesse.
Within Hasidism, the “nigun” (melody) is a tool used to awaken the soul toward spiritual reflection. The melody is believed to have a power to rid man of the mundane, day-to-day dust, and elevate him unto higher states of connection with the Creator and all of creation. The Nigun Quartet translates these and other traditional Jewish melodies into contemporary jazz.
The Nigun Quartet strives to express pluralism and patience, working with musicians from different religious sectors of Judaism and non-religious. This aspiration is expressed in the Quartet’s audience: people of all different ages, backgrounds and sectors, unifying around a higher musical experience.
