Falmouth Jewish Congregation and the Worcester JCC invite you to a virtual Jewish Book Council author talk with award-winning journalist and author Julie Satow, who will present an illustrated talk and engage with the audience in a Q&A about her most recent book, “When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion,” a glittering portrait of the golden age of American department stores and of three visionary women who led them.

This event marking Women’s History Month offers an opportunity for our community to reflect on the historical and current role of women in shaping history and society.

“When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion” is a New York Times bestseller and was named a Best Book of the Year by Amazon, Smithsonian and Financial Times. Satow draws back the curtain on three visionaries who took great risks, forging new paths for the women who followed in their footsteps. It’s a stylish account, rich with personal drama and trade secrets, and captures the department store in all its glitz, decadence, and fun, and showcases the women who made that beautifully curated world go round.

“Ms. Satow’s carefully researched book is compulsively readable: I found myself dashing through it like a novel. She portrays the women with verve; we get a glimpse into their lives, as well as a sense of what it was like at each of these retail meccas.”
—The Wall Street Journal

Julie Satow‘s first book, “The Plaza: The Secret Life of America’s Most Famous Hotel,” was a New York Times Editor’s Pick and NPR Favorite Book of the Year. A regular contributor to The New York Times, her work has also appeared on National Public Radio, Travel + Leisure, and elsewhere.
