The term antisemitism has been used since the 1850s when Wilhelm Marr founded the “Antisemitism Party” in Germany. It had a very specific and fairly narrow context then, yet has now become a broad term to describe any negative feelings about Jews and/or Israel and also to describe age-old animus toward the Jews that was referred to in German as Judenhass (Jew hatred).
What is the relationship between anti-Judaism (or even Judenhass) and antisemitism. Are we properly using the term in our descriptions of contemporary events? What is at stake for us in investing the resources we do to fight antisemitism?
