The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State University invites the community to a talk by Holocaust survivor Endre (Andy) Sarkany. Endre was born in Budapest, Hungary, on Oct. 31, 1936. In the spring of 1944, Endre’s father was taken to the Mauthausen concentration camp. The building where Endre lived inside the Budapest ghetto housed a nursery/kindergarten, which was affiliated with the Jewish Agency of Hungary. This would prove significant to Endre’s survival and that of at least 150 orphaned children during the Holocaust.
After World War II ended, Endre remained in what became communist-controlled Hungary. Endre escaped Hungary following the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and immigrated to the United States.
Please join us for an evening with Endre (Andy) Sarkany as he recounts his personal experiences living through the Holocaust and under the communist regime in Hungary, and his story of immigration to the United States.
