In his groundbreaking book “God in Search of Man,” Rabbi Abraham Heschel showed us that as much as humanity might be at a loss about God’s absence in life’s tragedies, God is searching for us even more than we are for God. Perhaps today the same is true for our relationship with the Earth.

Might She be searching for us to step into our full humanity even as we try to make sense of environmental dangers and upheavals? Why was Adam the first name given to human beings in the Torah, but not other species of earthlings? What are the biblical models for our relationship to the Earth? What if indigenous peoples around the world are right and we are not the only sentient species on the planet?

This session will take the form of a group discussion, drawing our inspiration from the Book of Genesis and the rest of Tanakh, Rabbi David Seidenberg’s “Kabbalah and Ecology” and indigenous traditions from around the world.

Rabbi Moshe Givental is the founder of Water from the Rock: Eco-Chaplaincy and Environmental Education and the indigenous partnerships coordinator at Climate Change and Consciousness. He holds an M.A. in clinical psychology, rabbinic ordination from Hebrew College and is a facilitator of the Work That Reconnects. He is also a spiritual guide at a federal prison and a community rabbi for Russian-speaking Jews in metro Detroit.
