10th Annual Izzy Arbeiter Holocaust Essay Contest

February 15, 2016
holocaust_holocaust-3

This Essay Contest is a tribute to Israel “Izzy” Arbeiter, a Holocaust survivor and lifelong rights activist who lost several family members in the Holocaust. He is a past president of the American Association of Jewish Holocaust Survivors of Greater Boston. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to write a 400-800 word essay on the following topic. Essays will be judged on originality, knowledge, style and depth.

“Our commitment to remember implies not only remembrance, but
also a warning that such tragedies must never happen again. The
memory of the Holocaust must become part of the human conscience
for all time, beyond sorrow, suffering, and death. May a new love of
humanity be born out of the horrors that we have known. We pray
and hope that remembrances like this will take root and continue on
in the future, and with future generations, and for a world blessed
with peace, understanding, and goodwill to all humankind.”
-Israel Arbeiter, Holocaust Survivor

What does Mr. Arbeiter mean when he prays for a new love of humanity to be born out of the horrors of the Holocaust?

Explain how this tragedy can compel us all to cultivate a better world.

How will you, in your own way, remember the Holocaust and ensure the memory of those who died is not forgotten?
